Migraine Treatment in Houston

Migraines affect more than 39 million Americans. If you’re one of them, you know their disturbing effects on your body and your life. Nearly 90% of migraine sufferers are unable to work or function during a migraine. It can have adverse effects on your career, health, and relationships, too.

Although many doctors prescribe medications to treat the pain, they have many side effects like nausea, fatigue, and increased heart rate. That’s why over two-thirds of migraine patients don’t take medicines.

Then what should you do to treat severe, recurring, and painful headaches?

Whole-Person Healing and Treatment Plan

With Dr. Brett Franson, you can experience a different approach for dealing with your migraines.  Dr. Franson believes that addressing you as a whole person instead of just a collection of symptoms leads to more significant outcomes.  When most people enter a doctor’s office, they see it as having something-a symptom, and they want the doctor to make that symptom go away.

Dr. Franson understands that the symptom is just a sign of an underlying issue, and unless we address that issue, you will be forever treating symptoms.

What is the underlying issue?  Loss of normal function.  After all, if everything were working right, you wouldn’t be looking for a doctor, now would you?  At Franson Chiropractic, how your body is malfunctioning, which may be causing your migraines is our main focus.  We look for the LOSS of normal function and work to restore it so that your body may resume functioning normally and correct itself.

What Are the Causes of Migraines?

The exact causes aren’t entirely understood. However, certain environmental factors and genetics may play a vital role. When there’s an imbalance in the brain chemicals, including serotonin, which regulates pain in the nervous system, migraines are frequent. It begs the question – how did those chemicals get out of balance in the first place?  Overwhelming stresses and patterns of stress can cause your body to react.  These reactions not only affect chemical levels; they also affect physical function.  Restoring that lost function can have beneficial effects on your body’s ability to rebalance its chemicals.

Rather than a healthcare professional trying to figure out which chemicals you need and in what amount at the exact right time (virtually impossible); simply freeing your body of stresses and restoring normal function gives it a chance to correct itself.

Of course, there can be other causes of migraines that may require medical attention, such as vascular damage, stroke, cancer/tumors, and post-traumatic injury issues, among others, which we take into consideration.

Many times, certain ‘triggers’ can activate migraines.  Avoiding these triggers, although it may be helpful, doesn’t always allow you to live your life on your terms.  Having to prevent ‘this’ and always looking out for ‘that’ can be daunting.  In cases where functional loss, physical distortion, and accumulated stress are the primary factors, these are Dr. Franson’s specialty.  Discovering if your migraines are due to these issues is a central focus for determining if you qualify for care with Dr. Franson.

Here are some commonly known ‘triggers’ for migraines:

Food

Salty, highly processed, and aged food like cheese or salami can cause migraine headaches. Similarly, artificial sweeteners, MSG, alcohol, and caffeine can also cause a migraine.

Skipping Meals

If you have a history of migraines, it’s important to consume all meals on time.

Sensory Stimulation

Strong smells, bright lights, or loud noises can set off a migraine. Common triggers include cigarette smoke, perfumes, paint, sunlight, flashlight, etc.

Hormonal Changes

Hormones are a common trigger for women as a change in estrogen levels can lead to a migraine.

Stress

Constant mental stress at home or work can damage your mind and body. As Dr. Franson calls them, Chronic Adaptive Patterns are a result of repetitive stresses which distort your body while affecting your overall sense of well-being.

Regardless of the trigger, helping restore normal function so your body can resume adapting to stresses instead of feeling overwhelmed by them is the most logical choice.

No matter what the trigger or cause of your migraine, we help you regain normal function, which simply gives your body a chance to heal itself, the way nature intended. Our natural, safe, and effective techniques ensure that the pain goes away and you resume living your best life.

Watch out for the following migraine symptoms:

There can be four stages of a migraine, although not everyone experiences these – prodrome, aura, attack, and postdrome. Nearly half of all migraine sufferers experience prodrome – symptoms may include constipation, depression, diarrhea, drowsiness, food cravings, or hyperactivity, and irritability.

When certain disturbances of the senses (auras) lead to a migraine, they act as a warning sign. Some of these can be visual, while others are more physical. Here are some examples:

  • Stiffness in the neck, shoulders, or limbs

  • Depression

  • Severe, throbbing, or pulsing pain

  • Vomiting

  • Sensitivity to light and/or touch

  • Hyperactivity

  • Irritability

  • Difficulty in breathing

  • Vision impairments

Then there is ‘attack’ phase and postdrome phase. During which, you experience full-blown symptoms and afterward, the feelings of exhaustion and lethargy.

Migraines are no joke. Chemically treating symptoms can be difficult, not to mention toxic and may lead to other issues. Dr. Franson believes and has seen numerous times in practice, that restoring lost function to your neuro-spinal system (nerve and spine system) can provide many sufferers of migraine a chance to live free of migraines once and for all and go on to live normal, healthy lives.
